World Rheumatism Day

ORANJESTAD — World Rheumatism Day (known internationally as World Arthritis Day) is celebrated every year on October 12th.

The main goal of this day is to raise global awareness and highlight the impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).

This year, the official theme launched by the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) is "Achieve Your Dreams." This campaign focuses on the personal goals and hopes of patients, emphasizing collaboration with doctors and researchers to help make those dreams possible despite physical limitations.

The health of our joints plays a fundamental role in our mobility and overall well-being!

Today, the Department of Public Health (DVG) emphasizes the importance of recognizing early signs of joint inflammation and reduced mobility so you can take action early.

Three Tips to Protect Your Joints and Manage Rheumatic Conditions:

  • Maintain an active lifestyle with low-impact exercise: Gentle, regular physical activity—such as swimming, walking, or yoga—strengthens the muscles surrounding your joints without putting excessive strain or pressure on them.
  • Eat a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet: Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish), fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit processed foods and refined sugars, which can trigger or increase body inflammation.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking: Keeping a healthy weight reduces constant stress on your knees, hips, and feet. Additionally, avoid smoking, as it is a major risk factor that can trigger or worsen rheumatic conditions.

Remember: Taking care of your body today helps prevent pain tomorrow!
