Precautionary measures during hot weather
ORANJESTAD—During the last days, we could take note of immense heat, a very high temperature, and a strong sun.
It is due to the approaching hurricane season. During this season, which runs from June to November, our community can expect days with a lot of heat and very high temperatures that can be dangerous to our health. To withstand this natural phenomenon is not possible, but we can take action to protect ourselves and prevent consequences because of the extensive heat. Heat can cause dehydration, sunburn, high blood pressure, headache, fatigue, dizziness, vomiting, muscle cramps, and even stroke in a person in a hot temperature for a long time.
The Department of Public Health advises the community to do the following on the following days:
- Avoid the heat: Stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
- Stay hydrated: Drink enough water to prevent dehydration.
- Eat light foods: Choose foods high in water, such as fruits and vegetables.
- Avoid hot drinks and beverages containing caffeine or high sugar during the hottest hours.
- Buy light clothing. Wear clothes that are loose on the body to avoid heat stroke. Use light-colored clothing, preferably cotton or linen.
- Use sun protection. Wear a hat or cap and sunglasses and use sunblock with a high SPF.
- Keep the rooms cool: Use fans, air conditioners, or close your curtains, or have good ventilation to keep the rooms cool.
- Get care for vulnerable groups: Give extra attention to children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
- Limit physical exertion: Limit strenuous physical activities during the hottest hours.
- Healthy food: Eat light and nutritious food to keep your body in good condition.
- Use mosquito protection: Use mosquito repellent to prevent diseases such as dengue and Zika.
Our children, the sick, and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this heat. It is very important to watch them constantly and keep their bodies cool to help them withstand the high temperature and hydrate them with enough fluids.
