Back to School: Health Tips for Parents!

ORANJESTAD – The Department of Public Health (DVG) is sharing a number of practical tips with parents to help children have a healthy and positive start to the new school year after summer vacation.

A good school year starts with a healthy child. As a parent, keep the following points in mind:

  • Get enough sleep: Establish a consistent bedtime routine. Getting enough sleep is important for concentration, memory, mood, and energy throughout the day.
  • Healthy nutrition: Make sure your child starts the day with a good breakfast, and pack a nutritious snack and healthy lunch for school.
  • A personal water bottle for every child: Make sure your child takes enough water to school in their own reusable water bottle. Teach your child not to share their water bottle, cup, fork, or other utensils with other children.
  • Good hygiene: Teach your child to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the restroom. Remind your child to cough and sneeze into their elbow.
  • Protection from heat and the sun: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water and use sunscreen, especially during recess and outdoor activities.
  • Vaccinations: Make sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date. Vaccination helps protect your child and the school community against various infectious diseases.
  • Is your child sick? Keep them home: If your child has a fever, is vomiting, has diarrhea, or does not feel well, keep them home to recover and help prevent the illness from spreading at school.
  • Personal care: Keep your child’s nails short and clean, encourage good oral hygiene, and regularly check their feet.
  • Emotional health is important too: Talk to your child about their school day, ask how they are feeling, and whether there is anything at school that is worrying them. Pay attention to changes in behavior or mood.

A well-nourished, hydrated, well-rested, and healthy child has a better foundation for learning, growing, and enjoying the school year.
