World Breast Cancer Day: Early Detection Saves Lives

ORANJESTAD – Today, October 19, World Breast Cancer Day (International Day Against Breast Cancer) is commemorated globally.

Driven by the World Health Organization (WHO), this global initiative aims to raise awareness, promote early detection, and offer support to individuals and families affected by the disease. Throughout October, health organizations worldwide—including the Department of Public Health of Aruba (DVG) and the Mary Joan Foundation—unite to emphasize the importance of this fight. In Aruba, the entire month is dedicated to island-wide awareness under the "Make Aruba Pink" campaign.

Key Prevention & Wellness Tips

The World Health Organization emphasizes that healthy lifestyle choices and early detection are vital in reducing risk and saving lives:

  • Maintain an Active Lifestyle: Regular physical activity helps lower the risk of breast cancer and keeps your body strong.
  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins helps maintain overall health and immunity.
  • Perform Self-Examinations & Schedule Mammograms: Practice regular breast self-exams and consult your healthcare provider about scheduling a mammogram if you are in the recommended age group.
  • Avoid Tobacco & Limit Alcohol: Refraining from smoking and limiting alcohol intake significantly contribute to lower cancer risks.

A Shared Responsibility for Our Community

Breast cancer affects many women and, in less common cases, men as well. Early detection remains our most powerful tool against this disease.

Let us practice prevention, encourage our loved ones to get screened, and stand together for a healthier Aruba!
