Use of Fake License Plates Is Punishable!

ORANJESTAD – The Tax Department has recently discovered that several motorists are driving around with fake license plates. We want to emphasize that this is illegal and therefore punishable by law.

What is a fake license plate?

  • Any blue-and-white license plate not issued by the Tax Department.
  • Any old license plate from before 2020, for example, the orange-and-white plates.
  • ]Any plate made of paper, cardboard, stickers, plastic, metal, or any other material.

Fake license plates are not legal and not permitted on our public roads.

The red-and-white license plates from 2020 are still valid. Soon, the Tax Department, together with the Police, will announce the deadline for how long these plates can remain in use.

Report the case.
If you see a car, scooter, truck, etc., driving with a fake license plate, please report it using our digital fraud reporting form:

When reporting, you are not required to provide your name; reports can be made anonymously. It is advisable to include as many details as possible, such as the date and location where you observed the vehicle, along with its make, model, and color. Providing more details will enhance our ability to investigate the case effectively. You may also upload one or more pictures of the vehicle so we can have a clear view of it.

FIOT is investigating.
FIOT, our Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Team, is responsible for investigating cases involving fake license plates. These cases are classified as tax fraud and may lead to prosecution in partnership with other judicial authorities if deemed necessary. FIOT will also investigate the individuals and/or businesses that produce or print fake plates for their clients.

Correct and honest behavior
The Tax Department would like to reiterate that taxpayers must act correctly and honestly in fulfilling their tax obligations. It is not allowed for those who do not pay their motor vehicle tax to drive on our public roads with fake license plates. It is also unjust to those who fulfill their tax obligations to be faced with this misconduct, which ultimately damages our country.

Therefore, report it! Misconduct can never be justified!
