ORANJESTAD – On June 23, 2026, Prime Minister Mike Eman officially placed the protected monument seal on a traditional Aruban home (cunucu house) located at Alto Vista 12.
With this designation, the home officially becomes part of Aruba’s historical heritage and will be preserved for future generations.
The ceremony brought together several members of the Werleman family, representing multiple generations who grew up in the house, lived there, and became part of its history. During his remarks, Prime Minister Eman emphasized that the recognition extends beyond the building itself, encompassing the human, cultural, and social legacy that the home represents.
More Than a House
According to Prime Minister Eman, the home at Alto Vista 12 symbolizes important values such as perseverance, determination, strong family ties, and community spirit.
By preserving the home, Aruba is also safeguarding the history of a family that has left a lasting mark on the community. Special recognition was given to Antonio “Toni” Werleman and his wife, who made significant contributions throughout their lives to Aruba’s culture, music, and social development.
Toni Werleman was known as someone who was always willing to help others, maintaining a positive attitude and a steadfast commitment to making Aruba a better place. His love for his family, his community, and his country is why so many people continue to remember him with appreciation and respect to this day.
A Legacy in Culture and Community
The ceremony also highlighted the important role Toni Werleman played in promoting Aruban music and preserving the island’s cultural identity. His leadership, dedication, and love for his community have left a lasting impact that continues to be felt today.
The story of the Werleman family serves as an example of how a humble family, through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, can make a meaningful contribution to the progress of both the community and the country. The legacy passed down from one generation to the next has become an important part of the history of Alto Vista and Aruba itself.
A Shared Responsibility
With the placement of the official seal, the home has received special recognition as a protected monument. This designation carries a shared responsibility to preserve, care for, and protect this heritage for future generations.
The government expressed its gratitude to the Monumentenbureau Aruba, the Werleman family, and everyone who contributed to the official protection of the home.
This recognition ensures that an important piece of Aruba’s architectural, cultural, and community heritage will continue to be preserved and appreciated for generations to come.
