The tax-free amount for travelers increased to 900 florins

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - Recently, Minister of Finance and Culture Xiomara Maduro announced that as of April 1, 2024, the duties and excise free amount for travelers will increase from AWG 400.00 to AWG 900.00.

This exemption is valid for travelers bringing goods and products for personal use from abroad to Aruba.

Every traveler is entitled to an exemption from import duties on a limited quantity of goods and products subject to excise duties and import duties.

The maximum amount on the invoice for which travelers get tax exemption as of April 1, 2024, is increased to AWG 900.00. It applies to clothing, shoes, watches, mobile phones, toys, beauty products, etc..

If an invoice consists of multiple items and the total amount exceeds AWG 900.00, Customs will levy taxes on the products on the invoice exceeding AWG 900.00. If the invoice consists of only one item costing more than AWG 900.00, the traveler must pay tax on the invoice amount and cannot deduct AWG 900.00 and pay tax on the remaining amount.

For excise products such as alcohol and cigarettes, each traveler can bring in duty-free:

  • 200 pieces (1 carton) of cigars, or 25 pieces of cigars, or 50 pieces of cigarillo’s or 250 grams of tobacco
  • 1 liter of hard liquor such as rum or whisky, 2.25 liters of wine, or 3 liters of beer. The traveler must not pay excise duty on these quantities of products. If travelers exceed this quantity, they must pay excise duty on the products exceeding the allowed limit.

To qualify for tax exemption, all travelers must:

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • The exemption only applies to goods/products for personal use;
  • An import ban or a permit is required for certain goods/products, such as drones, medicines, plants, and meat.

Customs checks luggage and asks travelers to keep all invoices to calculate the value of products purchased abroad. For more information, visit www.douane.aw or the Facebook page of the Customs of Aruba.
