Strong Community Turnout for “Baki den Bario” in Dakota

ORANJESTAD – The community spirit was on full display on August 23 as residents from Dakota, Primavera, Wayaca, and surrounding neighborhoods turned out in large numbers to support the Baki den Bario initiative.

Cars and pickup trucks arrived throughout the morning, packed with waste, as residents took the opportunity to clear their homes and yards.

This edition of Baki den Bario was hosted in Dakota, using the open lot where Club Dosva once stood to help organize traffic and keep things running smoothly. The steady stream of vehicles highlighted how important these cleanup events are to the community.

Many residents have expressed their hope to see this program held more frequently, noting that it offers much-needed relief for neighborhoods struggling with waste buildup. People have also voiced appreciation for the government’s effort to provide a convenient and affordable way to get rid of garbage.

In response to this strong community participation, the government is working with local stakeholders to develop a more permanent solution for waste disposal. Plans are being discussed to create four or five designated waste centers around the island, equipped with large bins where residents can drop off trash for Serlimar to collect and process.
Officials also acknowledged that while some residents wait for these events to dispose of trash, this reflects the financial challenges many families face when it comes to regular waste removal services. Despite these challenges, the turnout in Dakota showcased the community’s pride and dedication to keeping their neighborhoods clean.

The government stressed the need for a long-term solution to the landfill issue. Since the closure of the island’s main dump, several informal dumping sites have popped up across Aruba. By expanding initiatives like Baki den Bario and creating permanent collection points, the government hopes to curb illegal dumping and make waste management easier and more affordable for everyone.
