Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba Officially Begins Demolition Phase for John G. Eman Building
ORANJESTAD – Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba (SMFA) recently marked a major milestone in the restoration of the historic John G. Eman Building.
With the official kickoff, the first phase of the project has commenced, focusing on the careful demolition of non-historic additions to the structure.
The historic property is located at Caya Betico Croes 39-41 in the heart of downtown Oranjestad.
The official ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mike Eman, Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever, along with representatives from Aruba Bank, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the Social and Economic Council (SER), architect Bert Kampsteeg (BK Consult), contractor D&C Partners VBA, and other distinguished guests.
Preparations for the Restoration Project
Since taking ownership of the building in December 2025, Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba has been working intensively on the technical preparations required for the overall restoration:
- July 22, 2026: BK Consult, led by architect Bert Kampsteeg, was selected to execute the architectural design. Together with project manager Jenilee Schotborgh from Monumentenfonds, the team developed the technical plans and documentation required for the next stage.
- October 2, 2026: Following the public tender process for the initial demolition phase, D&C Partners VBA was selected as the general contractor.
Preserving Historic Integrity
The demolition phase involves much more than tearing down structures. The work focuses strictly on the meticulous removal of non-historic additions. The overarching goal is to protect, preserve, and showcase the original elements that give the building its historical and architectural value.
This process demands precision, patience, and a deep respect for the building's heritage. The demolition phase is expected to take approximately two months, after which preparations for the actual restoration phase will move forward.
A Vibrant Future for Downtown Oranjestad
Upon completion of the restoration, the John G. Eman Building will feature a multifunctional concept combining public, commercial, and office spaces:
- Government & Advisory Offices: The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the Social and Economic Council (SER) will establish their headquarters in the restored building.
- Commercial & Residential Spaces: The project also includes a restaurant and a residential apartment, bringing new vitality and charm to Oranjestad's historic city center.
This effort aligns perfectly with the mission of Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba: preserving our cultural heritage by giving historical monuments a sustainable, modern purpose for the future.
Monumentenfonds is currently in the final stages of negotiations regarding the operational contracts for the restaurant and apartment. Further details regarding the operating partners will be announced shortly.
