School Media Center, a service for all schools
ORANJESTAD - The School Media Center is a service by the National Library of Aruba (BNA) to all schools.
The main goal is to help schools, teachers, and educators provide children with access to books for their reading skills development, both as a tool for text comprehension and leisure. The BNA ensures a collection of books of different levels is available at the school and in the classroom, from kindergarten to elementary school. The emphasis is on supporting education and promoting the joy of reading among children.
They offer different types of collections:
- Exchange Collection: 10 books per month;
- Project Collection: 15 books on a specific theme;
- Class Library: 30-45 books for a period of 3 to 6 months.
The School Media Center maintains good cooperation and communication with the schools. In 2023, it conducted an inventory among 70 elementary schools. The result indicated that 31 schools did not have an active library, 13 schools have a library but are inactive, 23 schools have a collection of books in the classroom, and 12 schools are preparing to open a library, 27 schools did not have a library, and 7 schools did not participate in the inventory.
