Prime Minister led the Kingdom's delegation at the "Summit of the Future" of the United Nations.
ORANJESTAD – On September 21 and 22, 2024, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes led the Kingdom of the Netherlands delegation at the "Summit of the Future" of the United Nations, held in New York.
The "Summit of the Future" is an important international meeting to strengthen global cooperation and ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
Meeting with the US State Department
An important topic discussed was the "US Customs and Border Protection-Preclearance."
Aruba is currently renegotiating with the United States to expand its preclearance capacity, considering the additional number of American tourists visiting the island. Additionally, the "Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report" was addressed. The US evaluates Aruba annually and reports this in the TIP report. So far, Aruba has maintained tier 2, but the country is working hard to reach tier 1.
Points of discussion included the political situation in Venezuela and expectations following the Presidential elections. The US stated they expect more transparency in the situation and will continue to monitor developments closely. The Prime Minister gave an overview of the impact that the situation in Venezuela has on Aruba.
UN Women's Conference on the abuse of women and girls
This conference addressed the urgent need to stop the abuse of women and girls worldwide. The "Pact for the Future" recognizes the importance of gender equality and how essential the empowerment of women and girls is for sustainable development. Although Aruba is not eligible to be part of the "Spotlight Initiative", the country is focusing all its efforts on the prevention of violence and the protection of survivors of gender-based violence.
In New York, the Prime Minister, together with the Prime Minister of Jamaica, organized a conference on the role of youth in the future. The conference covered the "Declaration on Future Generations," a declaration that explores solutions to safeguard future generations' needs on issues of demography, climate, and development.
Artificial Intelligence panel organized by the United Arab Emirates and UNDP
The Prime Minister took part in an Artificial Intelligence (AI) panel. The UAE and the UNDP launched "AI4SD", which offers open-source data, training resources, and collaboration tools focused on promoting the Sustainable Development Goals in areas such as inequality, poverty, climate action, and food security, with the potential to expand into other areas. The Prime Minister highlighted Aruba's ambitious vision based on resilience, innovation, and its commitment to sustainability and progress.
