Parliament of Aruba approves RWZI privatization.
ORANJESTAD – On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Parliament of Aruba discussed the law on the privatization of RWZI.
This law addresses the privatization of the three RWZI facilities (Sewage Treatment Plants) in Bubali, Parkietenbos, and Zeewijk, as well as the incinerator in Parkietenbos. Aruba Wastewater Sustainable Solutions NV will now manage these facilities.
The RWZI problem has been a challenge for many years due to the accelerated growth in tourism. The development of new condominiums and hotel complexes over the years led to an increase in the number of visitors, surpassing the waste processing capacity of these facilities. With this privatization, this problem will soon be a thing of the past.
The government opted for privatizing RWZI after exploring various possibilities to improve the RWZI facilities and facing a limited financial situation. It installed a steering committee, led by Mr. Jossy Figaroa, consisting of representatives from three ministries: the Ministry of Transport, Integrity, Nature and Elderly Affairs, the Ministry of Labor, Energy, and Integration, and the Ministry of General Affairs, Innovation, Government Organization, Infrastructure and Spatial Planning, where DOW played an important role. The Department of Legislation and Legal Affairs was also part of the steering committee for the legislation.
