Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Together

Indispensable links in addressing the issue of poverty.

Poverty is a persistent problem in the Caribbean. The impact is significant and affects health, opportunities, and the ability to participate. One in three residents in the Caribbean lives in poverty. The existing poverty policy is often complicated or insufficient, causing people not to find the support they need. Social initiatives are therefore indispensable in reducing and preventing poverty. They are close to the people, have their trust, and provide the support that people need.

For this edition of the Appeltjes van Oranje, the Oranje Fonds is looking for organizations that sustainably help break the cycle of poverty and debt issues, meaning organizations that empower people with knowledge and skills. An important criterion when selecting candidates is that the organizations aim to prevent or reduce poverty.

Voting Week and Pitch Day

From May 18 to May 27, the voting week takes place. Via the website www.appeltjesvanoranje.nl, everyone can cast a one-time vote for one of the fifty candidates. The organization with the most votes is the first nominee. The remaining nine will be chosen based on ‘pitch day’ in June. Here, they present themselves to each other and a jury. The jury has the decisive vote on which organizations are nominated.

Appeltjes van Oranje

The Oranje Fonds awards three Appeltjes van Oranje each year to organizations that are committed to a connected society. Initiatives that are indispensable and have been active for at least two years are eligible. The award is a recognition of their work and dedication. The theme changes every year. The prize consists of a bronze statue designed by Princess Beatrix and a cash prize of €25,000. The queen presents the award.
