October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day
ORANJESTAD – October 20, 2026, marks World Osteoporosis Day, a date dedicated to raising global awareness about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this bone-weakening disease.
This year’s theme, promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), is: "Create, Protect, and Strengthen Your Bones for Life."
Osteoporosis causes bones to become fragile and more susceptible to fractures. Because bone health begins at a young age and requires attention throughout your life, taking proactive steps early makes a lasting difference!
The Department of Public Health (DVG) offers key recommendations to help prevent osteoporosis and keep your bones strong:
- Nutrition: Consume calcium-rich foods that support bone health, such as milk and dairy products, leafy green vegetables, sardines, and sesame seeds, or take supplements if recommended.
- Vitamin D: Get morning sunlight and eat foods rich in vitamin D, such as oily fish and seafood, or take supplements. Vitamin D is essential for your body to properly absorb calcium.
- Physical Activity: Stay active by walking, climbing stairs, or engaging in weight-bearing and resistance exercises to stimulate bone strength and muscle tone.
- Healthy Choices: Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as both weaken bones and significantly increase the risk of fractures.
Take care of your bones today so you can enjoy mobility, strength, and independence tomorrow!
