NVWA in Aruba for food safety assessment!

ORANJESTAD—At the request of the Aruba Department of Public Health (DVG), the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) visited Aruba from January 15 to 28, 2026, to assess the current food safety situation.

During this visit, Dr. Gabor van der Straten represented the NVWA. The assessment primarily focused on the production and import of meat and meat products, with some attention to fish and eggs. It did not consider the safety of fruits and vegetables.

The purpose of the assessment was not an inspection but an overview of the system's functioning at that time. The emphasis was placed on the structure and functioning of the system rather than on individual people.
Collaboration and transparency are essential during this process to gain a clear picture of the reality.

During the assessment, they evaluated:

  • The applicable laws and regulations in Aruba, including existing rules and any gaps.
  • How Aruba handles meat in practice, from production and import to sales.
  • What's going well, and in what areas is there room for improvement?
  • Where is there a potential risk to food safety?

The outcome of this process is an inventory report evaluating the current food safety conditions for meat and meat products in Aruba, along with specific recommendations to enhance legislation and oversight, as well as to encourage collaboration among relevant partners.

With this visit, DVG reaffirms its commitment to transparency and ongoing improvement to enhance the community's trust in the health protection system. Through our Food Inspection Service, Hygiene, and Veterinary Services departments, DVG works daily to ensure the safety, peace of mind, and overall well-being and happiness of our community.

...because your health is our priority!
