National Library of Aruba to Present Two Classical Works Translated into Papiamento: Republic (Plato) and The Manual (Epictetus)

ORANJESTAD - The National Library of Aruba is pleased to announce a special presentation of two classical masterpieces newly translated into Papiamento by author Richard A. Frank: Republic by Plato and The Manual by Epictetus.

The event will take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the National Library of Aruba. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend and celebrate this milestone in making timeless philosophical works accessible in the local language.

Plato’s Republic is widely regarded as one of the most influential works in Western philosophy and literature. Through dialogue and debate, Plato explores enduring themes such as justice, education, morality, and the role of leadership in society. Frank’s translation brings this visionary text into Papiamento, ensuring that its insights remain relevant and engaging for today’s readers.

Epictetus’ The Manual reflects the ethical strength and clarity of Stoic philosophy, emphasizing integrity, self-mastery, and personal freedom. As a former slave who became one of the most respected philosophers of his time, Epictetus profoundly influenced generations of thinkers, including Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. This new Papiamento translation captures the enduring power of his teachings.

'Republic ' and 'The Manual' in Papiamento will be on sale on the night of the presentation. Both works will be available at local bookstores soon.
