Minister of Culture visits the Mongui Maduro Museum and Library in Curaçao
ORANJESTAD - In connection with Curaçao's Flag Day, Minister of Finance and Culture Xiomara Maduro visited the Mongui Maduro Museum and Library at Landhuis Rooi Catootje.
The museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the Sephardic Jewish families who settled in Curaçao. The library houses a sizable collection of information on the Antilles and Judaica.
At the Mongui Maduro Museum, Ms. Thamara Moreno-Verhuurt provided an overview of the history of four generations of the Sephardic Jewish Levy Maduro family, who settled in Curaçao in the 17th century. At Landhuis Rooi Catootje, where the museum is located, one can appreciate a part of Curaçao's commercial history and the role of the Levy Maduro family. Visitors can admire antique furniture and memorable objects that were part of the family's life, whose descendants were traders who made history and citizens who held important positions in the community of Curaçao and the region. Mr. Salomon (Mongui) Abraham Levy Maduro collected all information about the Antillean islands from the age of 14, and after his death, his wife, children, and daughter-in-law continued the work of preserving information, which now gives us an insight into what was happening in Curaçao, Aruba, and the other islands. Additionally, Mongui and his family also took care of the Judaica collection, which provides a view of the life of the Jewish community in Curaçao and the region.
Minister Maduro thanked the Mongui Maduro Museum and the Mongui Maduro Library for the tour and shared information during the visit.
