Know and Recognize the Symptoms of Chikungunya and Yellow Fever

ORANJESTAD - The Directie Volksgezondheid (DVG) is informing the community about the importance of recognizing the symptoms of mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya and Yellow Fever and taking timely action to prevent serious complications.

Given the regional situation, regarding the increasing number of cases of Chikungunya and Yellow Fever in several countries in South America, the Aruban community must remain well-informed and alert.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. 

The most common symptoms are:

  • Sudden fever
  • Severe joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Rash

In many cases, joint pain can last for weeks or even months.

Yellow Fever is a more serious viral disease, also transmitted by mosquitoes. 

Initial symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue

In some cases, the disease can become severe and cause:

  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • Liver problems
  • Internal bleeding

The DVG emphasizes that not all symptoms will be the same, but any suspicious symptoms must be taken seriously.

What to do if you have symptoms:

  • Seek medical attention immediately
  • Do not self-medicate
  • Inform your doctor if you have recently traveled
  • Rest well and follow medical advice

Acting quickly not only protects you but also helps prevent the spread of these diseases within the community.
