Investment in the San Nicolas Revitalization Project

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD – On Monday, September 2, 2024, Minister of Economic Affairs, Communication, and Sustainable Development Geoffrey Wever announced the San Nicolas revitalization project.

In recent months, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, in consultation with various stakeholders, has developed a plan to revitalize the central area of San Nicolas. This project is now ready to be carried out after the Council of Ministers finally approved the allocation of additional funds. It will kick off with a public tender at the beginning of October.

In 2022, the government organized a YES Summit, where various stakeholders and members of the San Nicolas community discussed crucial topics for the area's development. Based on the feedback received during the YES Summit, the Ministry of Economic Affairs developed a holistic plan to revitalize San Nicolas in different phases.

The vision is for the project to connect the center of San Nicolas with the sea. One of the suggestions received was to create a connection between the upper main street of San Nicolas and the lower main street, now separated into two areas.

Phase 1 will include the creation of a Sunrise Market on the current parking lot of Arubus, maintenance, and modernization of the bus terminal, expansion of public space for pedestrians, and the development of public space with the possibility for kiosks to create space for terraces and hospitality activities. There will also be more lighting, greenery, and infrastructure that is attractive to visitors.

It is a 4.3 million Florin project funded by public funds. The project is a joint effort with the Ministry of Transport and Nature, under which the Arubus property resorts. The creation of the Sunrise Market represents an opportunity for farmers and artisans, who will have space to offer local products, something that has been desired for a long time and is necessary to diversify what San Nicolas has to offer, not only for tourists but also for locals who can regularly enjoy the area.

The official unveiling of this project will take place in the coming days.
