Hurricane Season Begins: Be Prepared, Save Lives
ORANJESTAD – Today, June 1, marks the official start of the Atlantic and Caribbean hurricane season, which runs through November 30.
Although Aruba lies outside the area most frequently affected by hurricanes, we should not assume that we will never experience the impacts of a hurricane or tropical storm.
History has shown that weather systems can change course unexpectedly and affect our region.
The Department of Public Health (DPH) is urging the community to use this time to prepare themselves, their families, and their homes. Disasters do not come with advance warning. Proper preparedness can save lives and significantly reduce the impact of an emergency.
There are several simple steps that every household can take now:
- Review and update your family emergency plan.
- Ensure you have an adequate supply of drinking water, food, and essential medications.
- Keep important documents in a safe and accessible location.
- Know where to obtain official information during an emergency.
- Discuss with your family what each person should do in the event of a disaster.
In collaboration with the Crisis Management Office (CMO), the Department of Public Health has developed information and practical guidelines to help the community prepare for various types of disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and fires.
We encourage all citizens and residents to visit the Disaster Preparedness page at and take the necessary steps to prepare today.
Preparedness is not something you do when a threat is imminent. The best time to prepare is before an emergency occurs.
Disasters do not warn us in advance. Preparedness can save lives.
