Historian Adolf 'Dufi' Kock Donates Latest Historical Books to National Library
ORANJESTAD - Writer and historian Adolf (Dufi) Kock recently visited the National Library of Aruba to officially present his two latest publications.
The titles include 'Historische sectie van Aruba' (Historical Section of Aruba), dedicated to "Our Future Generation," and 'Missie van Noorse zeelieden' (Mission of Norwegian Sailors), which is dedicated to the Governor of Aruba, His Excellency Alfonso Boekhoudt.
Historical Section of Aruba
In this comprehensive publication, Dufi Kock covers a wide range of topics from Arubanese history. The 310-page book features 136 topics and is richly illustrated with historical images.
The Governor of Curaçao, His Excellency Mr. Mauritsz J. de Kort, writes in the foreword: "With respect and a heart full of gratitude, I present the historical work 'Historische sectie van Aruba.' This work stands as a testament to the spirit and cultural richness of our beloved island. Preserving the history of Aruba is of invaluable worth—a gift not only for those of us experiencing it today, but especially for the generations that follow."
Mr. Kock is widely recognized in his home district of Savaneta as a figurehead, historian, and writer. The book's cover was designed by visual artist Elvis Tromp in collaboration with Dufi Kock himself. Published thanks to the exclusive support and contribution of MetaCorp, the book has now been added to the library's National Collection. It is available for checkout at the Oranjestad and San Nicolas branches, and can be purchased at local bookstores for 75 florin.
Norwegian Sailors' Mission
The second, more compact book, titled 'Noorse Zeemansmissie' (27 pages), highlights a fascinating piece of San Nicolas history. It tells the story of the Norwegian Seamen's Mission (Norwegian Mission) located at Vuylestekestraat 23. During the heyday of the Lago refinery, thousands of Norwegian ships visited Aruba, including impressive whaling vessels. The mission provided sailors with a home away from home: a place to relax and stay in touch with loved ones by mail. It is a work that reminds us of the diverse influences that shaped the Arubanese identity.
