Governor Boekhoudt and Minister of Justice visit KIA
ORANJESTAD - On Thursday, March 21, 2024, the Governor of Aruba, H.E. Alfonso Boekhoudt and the Minister of Justice and Social Affairs, Mr. Rocco Tjon, took an extensive tour of the Aruba Correctional Institute (KIA) to observe the various recent investments.
Before the tour, they received a presentation on the current developments. Some notable points include the upcoming implementation of permanent staff in the "youth department" and the commencement of the forensic care project. It will provide many more youth activities based on the results of an assessment conducted among all detainees to determine their preferred courses and training programs. This approach will offer better content for reintegration and socialization.
One department that has recently received a lot of attention and investment is the medical department. It allows compliance with requirements while keeping costs low by providing the necessary care. Various infrastructure investments are taking place, but the long-term plan is to have a new institute.
Members of the management team gave a comprehensive presentation on the progress at KIA, not only in terms of infrastructure but also regarding personnel, to develop this "project dossier" with the assistance of the Netherlands.
