Global Handwashing Day 2026: Be a Handwashing Hero

ORANJESTAD – Every year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day is observed worldwide.

On this occasion, the Department of Public Health (DVG) highlights the vital importance of washing hands correctly and frequently to protect public health.

Washing hands regularly and properly is one of the simplest, most cost-effective, and most powerful ways to prevent illness and protect both our health and the health of those around us.

Throughout the day, our hands come into contact with numerous surfaces where bacteria and viruses easily accumulate.

Why is Handwashing So Important?

  • Disease Prevention: Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water removes the vast majority of bacteria and viruses that cause illnesses, including the flu and other contagious infections.
  • Protection for Family and Community: Proper hand hygiene protects not only you but also prevents the spread of germs to family members, friends, and coworkers.
  • Essential Personal Hygiene: Regular handwashing is a fundamental hygiene habit that keeps our bodies healthy and safe.

Key Times to Wash Your Hands

It is crucial to wash your hands at critical moments throughout the day, particularly:

  • Before: Cooking, eating, or touching your face, eyes, and mouth.
  • After: Using the restroom, touching shared or dirty surfaces, changing diapers, or handling pets and other animals.

How to Wash Your Hands Properly

To ensure your hands are truly clean:

  • Use Plenty of Soap and Running Water.
  • Scrub Thoroughly: Rub your palms, the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails for at least 20 seconds.
  • Rinse and Dry: Rinse well under clean water and dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer on the Go: When soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. Keeping a small bottle in your bag or car ensures you are always prepared.

Be a Handwashing Hero today and every day—clean hands save lives!
