For a Harmonious Community, Be a Responsible Pet Owner!
ORANJESTAD - Last month, it was announced that the Aruban government, through the Ministry of Public Health, Elderly Care, and Addiction, together with the Department of Public Health (DVG), is preparing a new policy for the welfare of animals and the entire community.
The policy will focus on promoting responsibility, preventing pet abandonment, and working together to create a safer Aruba for both people and animals.
Today, we would like to focus on one of the most key aspects of this policy: what it means to be a responsible pet owner.
Who is a Responsible Owner?
- Lifelong Commitment: A responsible owner is someone who, upon deciding to get a pet, understands that they immediately assume full responsibility for that animal and any offspring it produces. That responsibility stays with them permanently, or until a new owner is found for the pet.
- Health and Control: A responsible owner ensures that the pet's well-being and behavioral needs are respected. They also ensure the pet is as protected as possible against infectious diseases (for example, through vaccination) and unwanted reproduction (for example, through spaying or neutering).
- Identification: A responsible owner ensures it is clear to everyone that the pet belongs to someone. This is done by identifying the pet, for example with a collar or through permanent identification with a microchip. The owner makes sure the microchip is registered in a database with up-to-date contact information so that if the pet ever gets lost and found, a veterinarian can easily contact the owner.
- Safety: A responsible owner takes all reasonable measures to ensure their pet does not roam the streets unsupervised, which can cause neighborhood nuisances, harm the environment, or put the pet itself in danger.
The #NoMoreSuffering, #MoreResponsibleOwners campaign invites all citizens to be part of the change. The solution to this problem does not rely solely on legislation and government action, but on the commitment and responsibility of every resident of Aruba.
Be a responsible pet owner too. Every responsible act saves a life.
Spread love, give hope, and protect the welfare of our animals!
