First Group of Young Participants Earns Programa Piskechi Certificate

ORANJESTAD – Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever is celebrating the success of the first group of ten young participants who have successfully completed the inaugural Programa Piskechi (Fishing Program) course.

Programa Piskechi is an initiative of the Government of Aruba that invests in the next generation of the island's fishing industry while strengthening the future of Aruba's primary sector.

During the closing ceremony of the first course, participants received certificates recognizing the knowledge and practical skills they acquired throughout the program. The course was conducted by program partner Oasis Fishing & More under the leadership of Mr. Chito Rasmijn, an experienced and passionate fisherman.

Programa Piskechi provides young people between the ages of 10 and 17 with the opportunity to learn the traditional art of handline fishing, helping to foster a greater appreciation for the fishing industry while encouraging their active involvement in the sector.

Minister Geoffrey Wever congratulated all of the participants and emphasized that investing in the next generation is essential to strengthening the capacity and resilience of Aruba's primary sector and ensuring its sustainable growth.
"Our primary sector is fundamental to Aruba's future. By introducing young people at an early age to agriculture, fishing, and other activities within this sector, we preserve valuable traditional knowledge, inspire interest in these professions, and build a stronger foundation for the future of Aruba's primary sector," Minister Wever said.

"I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Chito Rasmijn and his team for organizing this series of courses for our young people and for their commitment to promoting fishing among Aruba's youth. The course was delivered with exceptional professionalism, dedication, expertise, and patience, and I am deeply grateful to Mr. Rasmijn and his team for their outstanding contribution," Minister Wever added.

The program will continue on a monthly basis, with a new group of ten participants taking part in a weekend course that combines classroom instruction with hands-on practical training.

Programa Piskechi is part of the Government of Aruba's ongoing commitment to strengthening the primary sector, promoting food security, and investing in the development of local talent. By combining traditional knowledge with practical education, the program is helping to prepare a new generation that not only appreciates the art of fishing but also has the potential to become the future leaders of Aruba's primary sector.
