DVG warns of increased use of weight-loss drugs
ORANJESTAD – The Department of Public Health (DVG) warns of the increasingly frequent and dangerous use of weight loss medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and other GLP-1 products.
The DVG, as the department that promotes general health and aims to prevent diseases, took note of an epidemiological alert issued by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) regarding the misuse of this kind of medication.
These medications are mainly used to treat type 2 diabetes and, in some specific cases, obesity with medical complications. However, these medications must be administered under strict medical supervision, by prescription, and based on a medical evaluation of each patient.
The DVG is concerned about:
- Taking over-the-counter medications purely for weight loss
- The increase in purchases through unofficial channels, such as online or illegal imports
According to PAHO/WHO, incorrect use can cause serious side effects, such as:
- Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
- Problems with the gallbladder
- Blockage of the intestines
- Additional complications (still under investigation)
Purchasing these medications through unofficial (illegal) channels increases the risk that the product may be counterfeit, contaminated, or poorly stored, putting your health and life at risk.
The DVG urges the community
- Do not take weight-loss medications without medical advice
- Do not buy products through informal or online (illegal) channels
- Always consult a health professional before using any medicine
The DVG will continue to monitor the situation and call on the community to make informed, conscientious, and responsible decisions related to their health.
