DVG Warns of an Increase in Rotavirus Infections Among Children
ORANJESTAD - The Department of Public Health (DVG) has detected an increase in rotavirus infections among children aged 0 to 14 compared to previous years, based on data from its epidemiological surveillance system.
Rotavirus is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis (stomach flu) in children. The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily through contact with hands and contaminated surfaces or objects. In environments where children interact closely, such as schools and daycare centers, the virus can spread rapidly.
Watch for Symptoms
DVG urges parents of children attending daycare, preschool, or elementary school to be alert for the following symptoms:
- Severe diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
- Signs of dehydration: such as a dry mouth, decreased urination (or dry diapers), crying with few or no tears, or extreme lethargy.
Important Advice: If your kind has diarrhea or is vomiting, please keep them at home and do not send them to school or daycare. This helps protect classmates and limits the further spread of the virus.
Additional Prevention Tips from DVG:
- Hand Hygiene: Wash children's hands regularly with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before eating.
- Cleaning: Frequently clean and disinfect toys, tables, and other high-touch surfaces.
- Medical Care: Consult a doctor immediately if the child shows signs of dehydration, refuses to drink, continues to vomit, has frequent watery diarrhea, or if symptoms worsen.
With the cooperation of parents, schools, and daycare centers, we can effectively curb the spread of rotavirus and protect the health of our children.
