DVG launches school art contest to promote responsible pet ownership
ORANJESTAD — The Department of Public Health (DVG) is launching the 'Responsible Owner' art contest for schools to educate children and raise awareness about the responsibilities of owning a pet.
The contest kicks off today, and all elementary school students from 1st through 6th grade can enter for free. Students are asked to create an original and colorful drawing featuring one or more well-cared-for dogs or cats in a yard, along with a responsible owner. They can also include elements of the Dog Ordinance in their artwork, such as providing sufficient food and water, a safe shelter from the sun and rain, veterinary care, and keeping the pet under control.
Each student may submit one drawing, which must be completed at school. Entry forms are available at school or from DVG and must be submitted to the teacher by September 30, 2026. DVG will collect the drawings from schools on October 1 and 2. The winner from each grade will be announced on October 16 on the Directie Volksgezondheid DVG Aruba Facebook page. Winners will receive their prizes during a special presentation on October 23 at 12:00 PM at the Government Administration Building. Additionally, the winning drawing will be made into a mural at the future Rescue and Control Center.
This contest is part of a broader campaign focused on encouraging pet owners to act responsibly and prevent animals from being abandoned on the streets. Through this initiative, DVG aims to teach children from a young age that a pet is not an object, but a living creature that requires lifelong care, protection, and love.
