Conference of Small Island Developing States of the United Nations
ORANJESTAD - This year, the fourth international conference of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) of the United Nations (UN) takes place in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27 to 30, 2024.
This year's theme is Charting the Course Toward Resilient Prosperity. The SIDS conference takes place every ten years. Therefore, it is crucial for Aruba, as a small island, to participate in this conference.
Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes will attend the conference and lead the Kingdom of the Netherlands delegation.
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) refers to a group of countries (islands) and territories that share unique challenges and vulnerabilities in their development. It is due to their common characteristics, such as small size, remote location, and limited resources, which make them more vulnerable to external factors.
As an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba is part of SIDS as an associate member of the United Nations. The Prime Minister of Aruba delivers a speech during the conference and meets with leaders from various countries, including Barbados, Suriname, and Antigua, and with international bodies of global influence.
Aruba's participation goal is to advocate for support and international cooperation, emphasizing the need for sustainable development, strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and financial and technical assistance from the global community. The United Nations and other international organizations recognize the unique circumstances of SIDS and are working to address the specific needs with specially adapted management and programs.
