Clean-up work at the Parkietenbos Landfill to Begin This Year

ORANJESTAD – The Ministry of Justice, Integration, Public Transportation and Energy has recently received the results of a technical assessment conducted by Witteveen & Bos regarding the situation at the Parkietenbos landfill.

The assessment identifies three priority areas that require immediate and structural attention:

  • The first concern is the slope on the southern side of the landfill, which borders the sea and is too steep. As a result, waste flows into the ocean, posing a serious environmental risk that can no longer be ignored. This situation requires urgent technical intervention to prevent further damage and to protect the surrounding ecosystem.
  • The second issue involves the phenomenon of so-called “smoldering waste,” in which waste continues to burn underground for extended periods without visible flames. Currently, sixteen locations have been identified where this occurs. At times, the waste ignites at the surface, causing significant nuisance for nearby residents. This problem not only creates disturbance but also poses risks to public health and safety.
  • The third concern is the presence of asbestos at the site. This material requires specialized and costly management to ensure it is properly contained and monitored without posing a risk to the environment or public health. A comprehensive and technically sound plan is necessary to address the situation in a responsible and appropriate manner.

For the Minister of Justice, Integration, Public Transportation and Energy, Mr. Arthur Dowers, it is unacceptable to ignore the situation at Parkietenbos. According to the Minister, the issue requires structural, sustainable, and responsible government action.

As part of the long-term vision for the area, the government is considering a complete transformation of the landfill into a site featuring native vegetation. The plan focuses on soil remediation, environmental rehabilitation, and improving the area’s aesthetic quality. Establishing a nature area would not only put an end to the longstanding nuisance experienced by the surrounding community, but would also create green space that contributes to overall well-being.
