Celebration of 75 Years of the European Convention on Human Rights
ORANJESTAD – In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), Mr. Gerlien Croes, Minister of Kingdom Relations, Education, Youth, Innovation, and Sports, emphasized the importance of raising awareness and promoting education on human rights within the Aruban school system.
Educational materials have been distributed to all school boards, with the request to encourage classroom discussions on human rights. The initiative aims to strengthen young people's understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens in a democratic society.
Minister Croes expressed appreciation to the Children’s Human Rights Commission, chaired by Sacha Geerman, and the Human Rights Commission, chaired by Jocelyne Croes, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DBB), for their dedicated efforts in preparing the educational materials. Thanks to their work, both primary and secondary schools will receive content tailored to the level and needs of their students.
As part of this week’s celebrations, Aruba will welcome Judge Jolien Schukking, the representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the European Court of Human Rights. Judge Schukking will deliver a lecture at the University of Aruba today, October 27, offering an opportunity for dialogue and reflection on the protection of human rights within the Kingdom.
Minister Croes emphasized that this commemoration is not merely about reflecting on the past, but also about preparing for the future:
“Knowing your rights is the foundation for knowing your voice and your place in the community. We want our young people to grow up as citizens who are aware, engaged, and confident in their own values.”
