ORANJESTAD - On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes attended a meeting along with Minister Rob Jetten, Minister Mark Harbers of the Netherlands, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas of Curaçao, Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs of Sint Maarten, and the Governors of Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

The primary agenda item of the meeting was climate policy, with each of them signing their commitment to the 8 points outlined in the agenda. With this signing, Aruba commits to continuing the steps to meet the objectives and make Aruba stronger and more sustainable in the fight against climate change.
Climate change is causing rising temperatures, which can lead to heavier rainfall and damage to our infrastructure, coral reefs, and coastline. The idea for a Kingdom-wide climate agenda originated last year in Aruba during the Energy & Climate Conference organized by Aruba and Minister Jetten. Here, Aruba expressed its commitment, and the Netherlands pledged to provide funds to assist Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

With the signing of the climate agenda, the countries have reached a climate accord consisting of 8 points:

  • Acceleration of the energy transition and better access to clean and affordable energy;
  • Having resilient infrastructure against climate change;
  • Improvement of water management and waste management;
  • Promotion of a circular and sustainable economy;
  • Intensive protection of the ecosystem;
  • Economic and financial incentives;
  • Promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing;
  • Monitoring and evaluation.

These are the agreements signed during the meeting, with the Netherlands providing funds to the countries within the Kingdom to meet these points.
Prime Minister Wever-Croes is pleased with the outcome of this meeting, where we can see that after last year's conference, everything is becoming more concrete, with the Netherlands providing financial support to assist us in achieving the climate agenda.
