April declared as the national month against child abuse.

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - On Monday, March 25, 2024, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes announced that the government declared April as the national month against child abuse.

Throughout this month, the government urges all citizens to pay attention to the grave issue of abuse and sexual abuse of children.

Child abuse has a devastating impact on the child's life, as it carries these wounds for the rest of their lives. But this not only affects the child itself but also their family. Despite all efforts by the government to address this, it is not enough, as research indicates that 99% of the perpetrators of this atrocity are known to the victim. It makes the government's and professionals' struggle even harder, as everyone may choose to leave their children with whomever they choose. Therefore, it is essential to declare April as the national month against child abuse to raise awareness in the community and provide a moment of reflection in the fight against child abuse.

On the other hand, the government has already amended various laws and procedures to combat child abuse:

  • Penalties for abusers have been increased, and efforts are being made in prevention and education;
  • more attention is paid to the social field, and the implementation of the Social Crisis Plan for this problem has begun;
  • a National Commission against Child Abuse has been established, and the Bureau Sostenemi transformed into an Advisory and Reporting Point for Child Abuse (AMK);
  • a "Sexual Abuse of Minors" commission led by Mrs. Lisette Gomez has been established - a person who has dedicated her life to the fight against this abuse and has contributed to various laws for the protection of children: the Childcare Act, the Child, and Youth Protection Act, elderly plan;
  • a Center for Children and Families has been opened to help parents strengthen their parenting skills;
  • the Department for Children and Youth has been established;
  • the FACT team Child and Youth of the Social Psychiatric Service has been introduced;
  • "Crisis and shelter places" have been expanded at the Foundation against Relational Violence,
  •  the Foundation for Probation has established its "Youth & Probation" department.

Many want to see harsh penalties for the perpetrators, but we must also consider the victim's well-being, and a thorough investigation must be conducted to achieve a high penalty.
