A Unique Mosaic Artwork with a Special Design

ORANJESTAD – Mosaic artist Enrita Werleman and her students from “Atelier Mosaic,” a mosaic studio located at Sta. Cruz 111, created a beautiful mosaic artwork at the invitation of library director Astrid Britten.

Library staff members and students of Enrita Werleman worked together to decorate a table and two concrete benches with mosaic. This was done for a special seating area under the Watapana tree at the main library building in Playa.

The following artisans contributed to this project: Donna Oduber, Livia Solognier, Dolores Machado, Dulce Goedgedrag, Deta Denters, Mariela Geerman, Bernadette Schouten, Grace Irausquin, Glenda Croes, and illustrator Ria Arrindell-Broeks. Library staff members also made a valuable contribution to this special work of art. It is truly a community project created for all library visitors. Heartfelt thanks to everyone involved!

Artist Enrita Werleman, a self-taught Aruban, began creating mosaic art approximately fifteen years ago. In addition to producing her own works, she also began teaching others how to work with various materials and tools. Over time, Enrita further developed her techniques and worked with a wide range of materials, including glass, stone, marble, and ceramic.

She also completed online courses and earned her diploma as a mosaic art instructor. During a two-year program with a professor from Chile, she expanded her knowledge to include all facets of mosaic art, from historical mosaics to contemporary applications. She learned to work with a variety of materials, tools, and adhesive techniques. She also specialized in the art of Picasiette mosaic, a technique that uses pieces of broken china and tableware. For this, she took courses in Germany and Chile and has also taught several courses here in Aruba.

The design of this artwork was created by Ria Arrindell-Broeks, an illustrator of children’s books. Ria has designed several mosaic works, including pieces in the Picasiette technique, which uses fragments of teacups, plates, and saucers. She is a former teacher who now dedicates herself fully to her artistic career.
