A new policy for the K-9 unit of the government

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD – On Thursday, July 11, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes held a meeting with DRH and representatives of Customs, Correctional Institute Aruba (KIA), and the Police Department regarding the K-9 Unit of the government of Aruba.

Currently, the government of Aruba has 23 dogs that serve the community. They work with Customs, KIA, and the Police Department. Each department has its policies and rules, with some being more advantageous than others. The Prime Minister announced that a few weeks ago, a report on the challenges and problems with the current policy structure was issued, which prompted a meeting to address these issues. The Department of Human Resources (DRH) led the work for a new policy together with the unions of the police, customs, and KIA.

The main reason for the new policy is to prioritize the welfare of the dogs. Aruba has a Dog Law and must appropriately treat all animals, and it also applies to the dogs in government service. The new policy will guarantee this.

The Prime Minister thanks KPA, Customs, KIA, and the unions SADA, SPA, SEPPA, and DRH for the new policy. The next step is legal and financial advice to formalize it.
