1,227 retirees no longer need to file income tax returns

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD – The Tax Department (DIMP) recently removed 1,227 retirees from the income tax registry. It applies to the 2023 tax year.

These retirees will no longer receive the income tax return form. If the retiree is married, this also applies to their spouse. In the coming days, retirees will receive a letter at home with more information.

Based on the 2021 income tax returns, the Tax Office determined that there are retirees whose income consists solely of the old-age pension from SVB Aruba.
There are also married retirees whose partner makes no money at all or whose only source of income is the SVB Aruba old-age pension. Due to these factors and considering the retiree's and his spouse's combined income is less than the AFL 30,000 annual tax exemption, the income tax is nil (zero).

If, in the future, the retiree or their spouse starts receiving other income in addition to the old-age pension from SVB Aruba, it will be necessary to contact the Tax Department to evaluate whether the retiree needs to be re-registered for income tax.

It is important to note that The Tax Department did not remove all retirees from the income tax registry. Retirees who, in addition to the old-age pension from SVB Aruba, have other income, such as a pension from a previous job in Aruba or another country or rental income from a house or apartment, must continue to file income tax returns every year.
