Wrapping up World Breastfeeding Week: An Investment in Mothers, Children, and Communities.
ORANJESTAD— To close the World Breastfeeding Week, Minister of Health, Social Affairs, Elderly Care, and Addiction Management Melvin Wyatt-Ras received two key figures in the area of breastfeeding and nutrition in the first phase of life: Nurse Caroll Kock of Pro Lechi Mama (PLM) and Mrs. Minouche Lopez, IBCLC, of Lacthera Aruba.
The meeting, which included a visual presentation and a constructive dialogue, shed important light on the current situation of breastfeeding in Aruba.
Some facts from the presentation:
- 85% of mothers initiate breastfeeding;
- Only 41% initiate it during the first hour after birth;
- And only 19% continue to breastfeed until 6 months after birth.
Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is widely recognized by World Health authorities, such as WHO and UNICEF, as one of the most effective interventions to stimulate health and sustainable development. Breastfeeding helps prevent infection, strengthens the immune system, and contributes to a strong foundation of health and well-being for life.
A local research, conducted in collaboration with the White Yellow Cross and Department of Public Health, clearly showed that many mothers stop breastfeeding not for lack of desire, but for lack of support, information, or time.
It emphasizes the need for a stronger support system for mothers, both at the family level and in the health sector, as well as at work.
Breastfeeding is not only an act of love but also an effective public health strategy.
According to international research (World Bank, WHO, UNICEF), for every dollar invested in breastfeeding promotion, the economic benefit can reach up to US$35 in long-term health and well-being.
The ministry thanks the continuous efforts of Pro Lechi Mama and Lacthera Aruba, who work every day tirelessly to promote a healthy start for every child.
"Investing in mothers is investing in the future of our community," according to Minister Wyatt-Ras.
