World Bee Day 2025: The vital role of bees in ensuring global food and nutrition security.

ORANJESTAD—Bees and their importance are more than simply producing honeycombs.

Bees are the invisible architects of our ecosystem and guarantee food supply for humans and animals. Their pollination work is essential to reproduce most plants that feed us, from fruits and vegetables to seeds. Without their vital role, global agriculture and human nutrition would be in jeopardy.

The World Bee Day 2025 theme, "Be inspired by nature to nourish us all," reminds us of the deep connection between humans and nature. Department of Nature and Environment (DNM) notes that today, May 20, commemorates World Bee Day. This day is an invitation to our community to admire how efficient bees are as part of nature and to use this as a guide for the actions to be taken. The following three points explain in detail what the threats to bees are and what we can do to help bee populations survive.

Restoring ecosystems:

  • Bee habitat: The loss of habitat from expansion to housing and intensive agriculture is a major threat to bee colonies. It is essential to restore natural areas with local plants to attract bees.
  • Sustainable practices: Promoting sustainable farming, such as agroforestry and organic farming, is essential to reduce the negative impact on pollinators.

Biodiversity conservation:

  • Plant variety: A diversity of flowers is essential for nutrition for bees and other pollinators. Planting different types of trees and flowers ensures they have food throughout the year.
  • Balanced ecosystem: Bees are part of a complex ecosystem. Conserving biodiversity means protecting all organisms that play a crucial role, from insects to plants and animals.

Food safety and nutrition:

  • Pollination and food production: Bees pollinate much of our crops. Without them, there would be less or no production of many staple foods, which could impact global food security.
  • Bees' pollination increases the quantity of food and improves its nutritional quality. Fruits and vegetables pollinated by bees have more vitamins and minerals.

In the context of World Bee Day 2025, it is necessary to acknowledge the vital role of these insects and take concrete action to protect them and their habitat.

It includes;

  • Practicing sustainable agriculture;
  • ecosystem restoration;
  • educating the public about the importance of pollinators to our survival;
  • using fewer pesticides;
  • planting varieties of flowering plants, and providing clean water in your garden.

We must also consider initiatives such as habitat protection programs and bee health research. Support local honeycomb producers. Ask keepers to remove bee colonies if they invade your property. Do not spray beehives with pesticides. It can result in a more dangerous situation where they begin to attack and sting.
