Working Visit to Stichting Hunto in Sero Colorado
ORANJESTAD – On February 18, 2026, the Minister of Justice, Dr. Arthur Dowers, paid a working visit to Stichting Hunto in Sero Colorado.
The visit was part of the Ministry of Justice’s efforts to address the alarming problem of addiction and homelessness among individuals struggling with substance abuse, which has escalated in recent years.
Minister Dowers received a tour of the facility and met with staff members who work daily with individuals battling addiction, guiding them and helping them stay on the right path.
Stichting Hunto has a maximum treatment capacity of 40 clients and employs 10 staff members responsible for guidance and supervision. Currently, the center is overseeing 10 clients, including 7 men and 3 women. In the past, the rehabilitation program for each client lasted between 8 and 11 months. Today, however, the best outcomes are achieved when the team, together with the foundation’s psychologist, conducts a professional assessment and determines that a client is ready to complete the program.
Clients who complete the program are referred to aftercare services, where they continue to receive psychological support. They are also provided with a relapse prevention plan that includes emergency contact numbers they can call if needed.
Stichting Hunto in Sero Colorado is not a place where individuals simply spend the day without purpose. Each day is filled with structured and recreational activities designed to keep clients engaged and disciplined. Everyone has specific responsibilities, such as washing their own clothes, keeping their rooms clean, participating in individual and group sessions, and following the agreed-upon program. In addition, clients may receive family visits on weekends, which play an important role in the rehabilitation process.
Working with individuals struggling with addiction is not an easy task. It requires courage, patience, knowledge, and empathy to achieve the ultimate goal: helping people overcome substance abuse and become individuals who can reintegrate into society and contribute to the general well-being.
Minister Dowers expressed his appreciation for the condition of the facility, the comprehensive program offered, and especially the dedication and expertise of the staff. Some staff members have themselves experienced profound life changes in the past and now share their personal experiences to help guide others.
Addiction remains a national challenge that requires a comprehensive and sustainable approach. The situation calls for decisive action and coordination between law enforcement and serious rehabilitation efforts. It is time to address the issue of addiction resolutely.
The Ministry of Justice will continue strengthening collaboration with relevant stakeholders to develop an integrated and sustainable strategy to combat addiction in Aruba.
