Virginia, the Rebel of Aruba
ORANJESTAD - Visual artist Vanessa Paulina recently presented a book titled 'Virginia, the Rebel of Aruba' at the National Library of Aruba (BNA).
Virginia, the Rebel of Aruba, is a book for young children in two languages, Papiamento and Dutch, written by Jeroen Hoogerwerf and illustrated by Vanessa Paulina.
Visual artist Vanessa Paulina presented her illustrations for the book during the celebration of 'Library Day', where BNA employees annually reflect on the work of the library and the services it provides to the community. The book tells the story of Virginia, the rebellious slave of Aruba. How Virginia fought for
her freedom and resisted the oppression of her owner. It is a story of rebellion, resistance, and struggle against injustice.
Prologue by Mrs. Xiomara Maduro, Minister of Finance and Culture: "There were slaves on Aruba too. Research in our historical archives at the National Archives of Aruba reveals some of these stories. The story of Virginia Dementricia Gaai is one of them. Virginia was a young female slave who rebelled against her owner because she wanted to be free to do what she wanted. Virginia was punished several times for not adhering to the rules imposed on her by her owner as a slave. However, no punishment could stop her fight for the right to decide for herself.
Virginia's story reminds us how important it is that we can decide for ourselves. We must always ensure that we continue to enjoy this right and do not succumb to the struggle when regards our freedom to decide for ourselves. It is essential to learn this from a young age. We do not need to look far for examples, as people in Aruba defended the right to self-determination. Virginia is one of them..."
This publication will soon be available in the BNA collection for its members.
