Unchained and Melange
ORANJESTAD—The National Library of Aruba has received two books for the National Collection of Aruba from poet Samuel Dumfries.
'Melange' was published in 2013, and 'Unchained: The Untamed Stories of My Soul' was published in 2025.
These are collections of poetry and prose. Both 'Unchained' and 'Melange' were illustrated by visual artist Nigel Matthew. The poem 'A hummingbird's embrace' in the collection 'Melange' was illustrated by visual artist Giovanni de Windt.
In his poems he expresses pain, confrontation, healing, and faith. Samuel Dumfries believes in a world on the road to total freedom, a world of connection, respect, and care for all, and love for your neighbor. Both works are available via aquazz.com.
He was born in Aruba and worked in education there for many years. In 2022, Dumfries completed 30 years of service with the Government of Aruba. After graduating from the University of Amsterdam, he earned degrees in environmental biology (aquatic ecotoxicology) and kinesiology (Posture and Movement Science - Medical Biology).
He began working in education in 1990 as a teacher of biology (1st grade) in different schools, e.g., Abraham de Veer School and IPA, and worked for ten years at Colegio Arubano (HAVO and VWO), as well as at the Examination Bureau and Curriculum Development of the Department of Education (DEA).
