The Ministry of Kingdom Relations participates in a study on the future of the kingdom.
ORANJESTAD – The Ministry of Kingdom Relations is participating in a large-scale study on the future of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The study focuses on the status of the so-called OCTs (Overseas Countries and Territories) and UPGs (Outermost Regions).
In June 2024, the House of Representatives adopted a motion by MPs White and Paternotte, calling on the government to investigate the current status and possible future scenarios together with the BES islands and Aruba. The study is being conducted by a team from the University of Curaçao, which is mapping the legal, economic, and administrative advantages and disadvantages for each island. Advisors from the Ministry of Kingdom Relations represent Aruba on the steering committee. The project will run until the end of January 2026. The researchers say their method is more thorough than past studies on the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the EU.
With this research, the parties involved aim to develop a well-founded vision for the future of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
