The Department of Public Health launches the "Eat Well, Pay Less" campaign to promote healthy and affordable food.

ORANJESTAD - To mark World Diabetes Day, the Department of Public Health (DVG) is launching the new "Eat Well, Pay Less" campaign, a national initiative that aims to encourage healthy and affordable food choices for everyone.

The campaign emphasizes that healthy eating does not have to be expensive and that small changes can yield significant health benefits.

A worrying situation
According to the most recent data from the DVG, 46% of adults in Aruba are obese. When overweight individuals are included, this means that almost eight in ten Arubans are overweight or obese.

The figures for children are also alarming: 42.7% of children between the ages of 5 and 12 are overweight or obese.

This situation increases the risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. In addition to its impact on public health, this also incurs significant healthcare costs, with over half of Aruba's total healthcare expenditures associated with chronic diseases.

Campaign Goal
The "Eat Well, Pay Less" campaign aims to demonstrate that healthy eating can be affordable. The DVG aims to support Aruban families with practical advice, accessible information, and sustainable alternatives that contribute to a healthier society.
Over the next twelve months, the campaign will highlight the risks of sugary drinks and highly processed foods. At the same time, it will promote more nutritious, tastier, and more affordable alternatives.

First Theme: "Change Your Sip"
The first theme of the campaign is "Change Your Sip." From November through January, the DVG will focus on reducing the consumption of sugary drinks.

The central message is "Think twice before you drink." In this phase, the DVG will provide information about the relationship between sugary drinks and diabetes and present healthier, affordable alternatives for families in Aruba. The Directorate of Public Health calls on all sectors of society—government, businesses, schools, and the community—to work together to create an environment that facilitates healthy choices.

Together for a healthier Aruba
“To achieve real change, we must work together. Health should not be a luxury but a possibility for all Arubans,” says the DVG.

DVG invites everyone to participate in the campaign, follow the practical advice, and take small steps every day toward a healthier lifestyle.

“Let us change our habits step by step and work together for a healthier Aruba.”
