Take care of your lungs: the organ that gives you life!
ORANJESTAD - International Lung Day is observed on September 25, providing an opportunity to raise awareness about lung diseases, encourage prevention, and remind people that protecting lung health is essential at all ages.
In connection with this, the Department of Public Health (DVG) would like to emphasize the importance of keeping your airways in good condition.
The difference between a healthy lung and an affected one is decisive for your quality of life:
- Healthy lungs: Are pink, elastic, and exchange oxygen efficiently, allowing you to breathe freely and effortlessly;
- Affected lungs: Darken, swell, and lose their elasticity, hindering oxygen entry and causing chronic shortness of breath and coughs.
The number one enemy of the lungs is smoking: Smoking (including the use of vapes) is the primary factor that destroys your lungs. The toxic substances in tobacco damage the cilia (the micro-fibers that clean the lungs), cause chronic inflammation, and drastically increase the risk of lung cancer, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), and serious infections.
The good news is that once you stop smoking, your lungs begin to recover and improve their function almost immediately.
Your health starts with good breathing. Let's take care of our lungs today so that tomorrow we can enjoy a life full of vitality!
