Restored “Fishermen Lost at Sea” Monument Officially Inaugurated at Gouverneurs Baai

ORANJESTAD – On January 14, 2026, the restored Fishermen Lost at Sea monument was officially inaugurated at Gouverneurs Baai.

The ceremony served as a moment of remembrance and reflection, honoring the fishermen who lost their lives at sea and never returned home. Speakers emphasized the importance of collective memory and acknowledged the sacrifices fishermen have made throughout Aruba’s history, particularly during times when fishing was essential for survival.

Prime Minister Mike Eman noted that the thought, “They went to work and never returned,” remains deeply rooted in the collective memory of many communities.

The restored monument stands as a tribute to the fallen fishermen and a place of remembrance for their families. Engraved with the names of those lost at sea, it preserves their legacy for present and future generations.
