Restoration of Lost Fishermen Monument Nears Completion

ORANJESTAD – The restoration of the Lost Fishermen Monument is in its final stages and will soon be unveiled in an official ceremony.

For many families, the monument represents a place to honor loved ones who went to sea and never returned. After thirteen years, the Ministry of Tourism, Transport and Labor, under the leadership of Minister Mr. Wendrick Cicilia, made the restoration a priority.

Artists Fernando Vermeer and Gilbert Senchi worked on the project, with support from Santa Rosa, Hadicurari, and the families of the fishermen. A total of 42 names are engraved on the monument. The restoration includes marble, bronze, and protective materials to ensure durability, while symbolic elements such as the compass and fisherman’s hook remain central to its design.

Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor mr. Wendrick Cicilia emphasized that the unveiling will be a moment to pay tribute to those who never received a farewell, but who are remembered with love and respect.
