Renovation Work Begins on the Former Brisas del Mar Pier in Savaneta
ORANJESTAD – After the government signed the implementation agreement in September 2025 with the company that won the public tender for the renovation and maintenance of the former Brisas del Mar pier in Savaneta, work officially commenced on February 9 with a ceremonial groundbreaking.
The former Brisas del Mar pier is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Savaneta community and is heavily used for various purposes, including fishing, swimming, traveling back and forth to the reef, and activities organized by different foundations and community groups. Due to the renovation work, the pier will be temporarily closed for several weeks. The Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and Primary Sector, Geoffrey Wever, will announce in due course when the pier will reopen to the public.
The maintenance and renovation of piers throughout Aruba are among the government’s priorities to strengthen and further develop the fishing sector. To give concrete expression to its vision and policy for the fishing industry, the government has allocated Afl. 500,000 for the renovation of piers used by local fishermen. The former Brisas del Mar pier in Savaneta is the first project under this initiative, to be followed by the pier at Colony near Rodgers Beach.
As part of the renovation, the pier will receive completely new pilings and beams, designed to enhance its durability, safety, and functionality. An experienced contractor, who has been carrying out renovation and maintenance work on various piers across Aruba for many years, is responsible for executing the project.
A solid infrastructure base is essential for the sustainable growth and continued development of the fishing sector. The government remains committed to providing fishermen and the broader community with the necessary infrastructure so that these piers can continue to be used both for professional fishing activities and for recreational enjoyment at sea.
“I am pleased to see that our vision for the fishing sector is becoming a reality today. We are starting with one pier, and soon we will renovate the next, until they have all been completed. Before long, the former Brisas del Mar pier will be fully renovated and ready for use by our fishermen and all residents of Savaneta,” said Minister Wever.
