New Commander of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee's Caribbean Area Brigade Pays Visit
ORANJESTAD – Minister of Justice Dr. Arthur Dowers recently received an introductory visit from Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Taribuka, the new commander of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee's (KMar) Caribbean Area Brigade.
Since September 2026, Patrick Taribuka has served as commander of the KMar's Caribbean Area Brigade. Taribuka succeeds Lieutenant Colonel Gerhard Smit, who had led the brigade since June 2024.
In his new role, Taribuka oversees KMar units across the six Caribbean islands of the Kingdom. His visit to Minister Dowers took place in the context of his appointment and focused on cooperation and joint responsibilities in the areas of security and border control.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the importance of strong collaboration among the various partners within the Kingdom. Although each island possesses its own unique character, responsibilities, and institutions, cooperation and mutual trust remain essential in combating border-related crime and supporting local authorities.
The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee performs various duties in the Caribbean region regarding border control and the fight against cross-border and border-related crime. Additionally, the KMar provides local authorities with expertise, personnel, and equipment. Marechaussee personnel play a significant role in the immigration chain, intelligence units, and the fight against organized crime, as well as in detecting document and identity fraud. Collaboration also extends to the Caribbean Coast Guard and other partners in the security and justice chain.
Developments in border security and transnational crime require a collaborative and well-coordinated approach, taking into account the specific situation and needs of Aruba.
Minister Dowers wished Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Taribuka much success in his new position and expressed confidence in the continued strong cooperation between Aruba and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
