Motorists to receive their license plates in the coming days

ORANJESTAD—The Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector announces that motorists and motorcyclists will receive their new license plates in the coming days.

The ministry is working closely with the Tax Office to finalize the process of purchasing license plates. Next week, the Tax Office will be ready to resume service for those awaiting the registration of their car, truck, or scooter and the issuance of new license plates. The first group to receive their plates will be those registered in categories MFA, DT, T, and O. These will be followed by the groups classified under categories A and V.

It is important to explain that the tax office normally orders enough license plates to meet the demand for all vehicles. The Tax Office also sets aside a certain number of additional license plate numbers as a reserve. However, since September 2025, demand for license plates has increased dramatically, causing the reserve for categories A, MFA, DT, and O to quickly run out. Between September and December 2025, the Tax Office ordered 3,000 additional license plates, which quickly ran out due to the constant demand for new vehicle registrations.

In January 2026, the Tax Office resumed the purchase of more license plates. Part of this process was formalizing the increase in the number series for the various license plate categories through a ministerial decree. The Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector, Mr. Geoffrey, has since signed this decree, allowing the purchase process to proceed quickly. It involves the purchase of 6,750 license plates.

The Tax Office is working closely with the plate manufacturer, allowing receipt and issuance of the plates as soon as possible. Vehicle registration for other license plate categories has not been halted in the meantime. The Tax Office continues to register vehicles that do not fall under categories A, MFA, DT, and O. Payment of motor vehicle tax is also proceeding as usual.

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector, along with the Tax Office, acknowledge the frustration caused by the delay in issuing license plates and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. They assure motorists and motorcyclists that it will not be long before they receive their license plates.

Minister Wever sincerely thanks the team at the Tax Office and the company that produces the license plates for their excellent cooperation and the work they do. Minister Wever also thanks motorists and motorcyclists for their patience and understanding.
