Last Week to Submit Applications: The Government of Aruba Reminds Organizations of the "Open Call" for the Commemoration of Emancipation Day 2026

ORANJESTAD - Some time ago, the Government of Aruba officially announced an "Open Call" in connection with the commemoration of Emancipation Day 2026, which is observed annually on July 1.

The initiative invites community organizations, cultural groups, foundations, and civic initiatives to submit projects and activities that contribute to a dignified, meaningful, and unifying commemoration of the abolition of slavery.

According to Prime Minister Mike Eman, Aruba is currently in an important phase in which the history of slavery is receiving greater recognition and attention within society. This "Open Call" is intended to encourage dialogue, reflection, and a sense of unity within the Aruban community.

"We want to create opportunities for greater awareness and participation in the way Aruba commemorates this history. This is important not only for understanding our past, but also for considering how we can continue building a society characterized by greater connectedness and mutual understanding," Prime Minister Eman stated.

The government recognizes that the history of slavery in Aruba and throughout the Caribbean has many dimensions, including the transatlantic experience, regional relationships among the islands, and the various forms of slavery that affected communities in the past. According to the government, this historical complexity makes it all the more important to provide space for diverse voices and initiatives within society.

To support this initiative, the Commemoration Committee has made a total budget of USD 30,000 available. These funds will be distributed among selected projects and activities.

Priority will be given to initiatives that:

  • Create opportunities for remembrance and recognition;
  • Promote awareness and dialogue;
  • Strengthen unity within Aruban society.

The government therefore reminds organizations of the "Open Call," under which applications may only be submitted by legal entities, such as foundations and associations.

Eligible activities include ceremonies, storytelling projects, artistic initiatives, dialogue events, cultural expressions, and other creative forms of community participation.

This is the final week for submitting applications. Interested organizations may submit their application forms by email no later than June 8, 2026, at 12:00 noon to: minaz@arubagovernment.aw.

The Government of Aruba invites the community to actively participate in this process and to help build a lasting tribute that not only reflects on the past but also contributes to how Aruba engages with this history today and in the future.
